With "Nils Wogram's Root 70", released in 2001 on 2nd Floor, trombonist Nils Wogram, Hayden Chrisholm on alto saxophone, double bassist Matt Penman and Jochen Rückert on drums first played together into the ears of inclined listeners. In the meantime, twenty years have passed since the band was founded. On the occasion of this anniversary the band is - with a look back and forward - on tour. Seven albums followed the first one. The latest four have been released on Wogram's own label, nWog-Records. In founding his own label, the 47-year-old saw the opportunity to pursue a "stringency" - to be able to focus on the long-term development of his bands without having to make commercial compromises. This concern seems to have been more than successful, especially with Root 70. On "Wise Men Can Be Wrong", for example, the band devoted itself to jazz standards, in order to test itself once again with increased skill on material that probably accompanies many musicians at the beginning of their careers, for "Riomar" the band even expanded its line-up. Root 70 with Strings, in allusion to Charlie Parker with Strings, gives itself over to influences of Miles Davis' "Birth Of The Cool" Mendelssohn and Alban Berg, among others, and does not create a juxtaposition of jazz quartet and strings, but a common, newly to be explored togetherness.
Root 70 succeeds in reinventing itself again and again without losing the essence of their playing together. Over the years, the band has developed an unmistakable band sound and its own language, the sound of which we await - live in Leipzig - with anticipation.
