Jazzclub Live: Philipp Rumsch Ensemble Denovali Record Release with Orson Hentschel
TIP
After the solo EP, the album with the whole band is now released - again on Denovali, the specialist label between avant-garde, jazz and indie pop from Bochum. And who now thinks: "Denovali, Denovali - wasn't there something at UT?" Yes, our MusikZeit in spring 2015! And so now, almost two years later a kind of return for the label, this time with two acts.
Philipp Rumsch (*1994) is certainly one of the most interesting Leipzig musicians, especially because he shimmies naturally from one genre to another without getting caught in the middle. He is known from jazz formations of the HMT environment, but also from his new project with Arpen and Jörg Wähner alias Shramm (which we will present in April at MusikZeit ).
And his ensemble also gleefully defies categorization. With such diverse fathers in spirit as Erik Satie, Steve Reich, Brian Eno and Aphex Twin, Rumsch and his eleven comrades-in-arms venture into a process of reversal: they transfer the tonal language of electronic-digital music, i.e. the recreation of "real" sounds through machine abstraction, back into analog spheres, put it back into the hands of real people.
Instrumentation
Erik Leuthäuser (voc, fx), Vincent Hahn (tp, flh), Antonia Hausmann (tb), Matti Oehl (as), Johannes Moritz (bcl, cl), Franziska Ludwig (vc), Volker Heuken (vib), Markus Rom (g), Paul Brauner (kb), Philipp Rohmer (b), Maximilian Stadtfeld (dr), Philipp Rumsch (p, elec, comp)
As an opening act for the release concert of the ensemble's first album, Denovali sends us Orson Hentschel, like Rumsch a classical pianist with electronic-experimental interests. The Dusseldorf native has recently moved away from classical minimal music in the direction of Massive Attack, Portishead and Björk, bringing melodies to the fore and letting samples be displaced by synthesizers. Our tip of the month.
