OPEN CALL "Body Time

Apply with your idea for the 45th edition of our international music festival!

You are hot. Fabric sticks to your skin. Moisture drips from the ceiling, your sweat mixes with that of others. You move close together in the euphoric crowd. Then: coolness in your toes. Sitting and sipping tea. Later, go for a walk. You don't have to look at yourself in the mirror anymore, you still know your face from the last video conference. Touch is so 2019.

Distance enters our everyday life completely unexpectedly. What has seemed self-evident all our lives suddenly seems fragile, almost unreal. This makes us aware of what we have always known: human beings are flesh and blood beings who experience things by moving through space and time in all their transience.

Waves of sound hit eardrums, making you shiver or tears flow. Head and feet bob to the beat, the mood lifts, even if you may not even particularly like the music. Spa facilities are flooded with relaxing healing sounds, driving beats encourage high performance in the gym. Vocal chords vibrate in chorus, while hands clap on leather-clad thighs during the Schuhplattler. Disciplined music-making bodies precisely remember the smallest movements and practice self-optimization in conjunction with a wide variety of instruments. They know aching limbs as well as the heartbeat backstage and the happy hormones when thunderous applause sets in.Musicians set trends and imitate such. They shape their bodies to please, provoke, and protest. As in all social spheres, they are admired, eroticized and exoticized, deliberately marginalized or simply overlooked because of their size, gender or skin color. Some therefore dare neither to be in the spotlight nor in the daylight, hardly believing - in line with everyone else - in their own existence.

In our festival edition this year, we want to adopt an exploratory attitude: The abrupt interruption of the last year brings us a heightened reflective awareness of the basal mechanisms of our experience. Unquestionably associated with much unhappiness, the current situation nevertheless holds an opportunity - the chance to become aware of habits, to question them and to surrender to new perspectives. The focus of attention is the human body in its relationship to space, time and sound. Together with artists and the audience, we want to circumnavigate the central significance of corporeality in the context of the production and reception of music, as well as explore undreamed-of potentials of perceiving, feeling and expressing.

Innovative project ideas are welcome that fit into this range of topics and make aspects of them tangible and reflect them in a special way. Interdisciplinary ideas are just as welcome as those that involve unusual concepts for the use of space. In addition to concert and performance formats, we also welcome speeches and exhibition contributions. Those who are not artistically active themselves, but have an ultimate suggestion as to whom we should definitely invite, are also welcome to get in touch.

From all submitted projects and ideas, at least five will be selected by our festival curatorship and invited to the 45th Leipziger Jazztage from 30.09.-9.10.2021, including travel expenses, accommodation and honorarium. All required documents should be sent by email to booking@jazzclub-leipzig.de with the subject "Body Time" by the application deadline on May 02, 2021.

The application must be accompanied by:

  • A brief description of the project idea, incl. spatial idea (max. 2 DIN A4 pages)
  • The artistic career of the people involved in the project
  • Work samples if available

We are looking forward to your applications!
