Musically strongly influenced by modern classical music and European chamber music, Swiss-born Sylvie Courvoisier has been combining this tradition with the downtown jazz sounds of New York City since moving to Brooklyn at the end of the 1990s. Her barely audible virtuosity culminates in breathtaking sensitivity and musical versatility.

Listening to Courvoisier's now seemingly endless oeuvre, one is tempted for a brief moment to believe that the fundamentally different styles she uses actually stem from one and the same musical tradition. Her characteristic, both sensitive and highly expressive playing is recognizable among thousands. Sometimes it appears brute and violent, sometimes fragile. It always bears witness to a curious, almost effervescent liveliness, which quite rightly finds no measure in its ongoing search, which is probably one of the reasons why she has become one of the most sought-after jazz pianists in the world over the past 25 years.
