Double concert with Michael Wollny & Joachim Kühn.
Cécile McLorin Salvant is probably the smartest and most talented storyteller in US jazz today. Born in Florida in 1989, with Haitian-French-Guadeloupean roots, she won first prize at the Thelonious Monk Vocal Jazz Competition in 2010 at the age of just 21. There was a label boss in the audience who immediately signed her. Even before her 30th birthday, she has three Grammys in her pocket.
On her latest album "Mélusine", released in 2023, she sings about the mythical figure of the same name - this time in predominantly French, but also in Creole and Occitan. She does all this with apparent ease. It is probably only a matter of time before more awards follow.
Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis says of her: "A singer like this only comes along once every few generations", the Guardian calls her a "jazz genius" and the FAZ raves: "When Salvant's voice leaps effortlessly through the octaves, the heavens open."
