Congratulations Eva!
Eva Klesse wins the Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Award of the Marion-Ermer-Foundation 2013!
This year's Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Award, donated by the Marion Ermer Foundation and awarded by the City of Leipzig, goes to drummer and composer Eva Klesse.
The Cultural Office received 17 valid applications for the prize, which is endowed with 6,500 euros.
The now 27-year-old prizewinner began her training on the drums at the age of eleven at the music school in her hometown of Werl. She gained musical experience in various bands and orchestras of different styles and in 2008 began studying jazz percussion with Professor Jo Thönes at the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar. Since September 2009 she continues this study at the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig with Professor Heinrich Köbberling.
Susan Weinert, Nico Teichmann and Bert Noglik were appointed to the jury for the Leipzig Jazz Young Musicians Award this year. According to their unanimous verdict, Eva Klesse has formed an excellent quartet of young musicians, including saxophonist Evgeny Ring, pianist Philip Frischkorn and bassist Robert Lucaciu. She has the gift of integrating different temperaments and writing compositions that give cohesion to the group, while at the same time making her signature unmistakable. Eva Klesse pursues a sophisticated concept as a drummer, combining impulsive playing with sound-rhythmic sensitivity. All members of the band find room for their own development under her sovereign leadership.
With the help of the prize money, she would like to realize a CD project with her Eva Klesse Quartet.
The award will be presented in cooperation with Jazzclub Leipzig e.V. at the opening event of the 37th Leipziger Jazztage on September 27 at 8 pm at UT Connewitz. Eva Klesse will be performing with her quartet.
