"Whenever Dominic plays the guitar, he creates colors, a whole spectrum of emotions, a sound architecture in which silence and sound have equal place. He transports the mind to higher spheres." (Sting)
For the GITARRENGIPFEL, the Leipziger Jazztage will make its first guest appearance at the Westbad. On October 19, Sting's guitarist Dominic Miller will play there with his own trio. The Buenos Aires-born guitarist is described by Sting as his "left and right hand," wrote the famous guitar riff from Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise" and "You Say It Best" for the "Notting Hill" soundtrack.
Miller's ECM debut album "Silent Light" features him solo and with percussion accompaniment, seems very international - in tracks like "Baden" (dedicated to Brazilian guitarist and composer Baden Powell) the Latin influence is unmistakable, while "Le Pont" recalls early 20th century Paris and "Valium" evokes Celtic melodies in the style of Bert Jansch. "Fields of Gold" is a quiet instrumental version of one of the best-known ballads by Sting, whom Miller has served for many years as guitarist - and co-composer of global hits such as "Shape of My Heart." Paul Simon praises Miller for his "wonderful style, with a touch of jazz and English folk music."
In his own accompanying text, Miller recalls a musical conversation with Manfred
Eicher, ECM founder and producer of "Silent Light," about the influence of ECM legends Egberto Gismonti and Pat Metheny. The "raw" sound of Gismonti, mixed with "classical overtones," fascinated Miller as much as the more "groove-oriented" mood and "Americana feel" in Metheny's music.
Miller's solo music is captivating in its quietness and intimacy. Sting, with whom Miller has collaborated since the album "Soul Cages" (1991), has also inspired him as a composer: "I am strongly influenced by his lateral understanding of harmony and the way he builds songs. Similar to him, I try to tell a story in instrumental pieces that are structured like a song in verses, choruses and transitions."
The title "Silent Light" is a reference to the film of the same name by Mexican director Carlos Reygadas, whose simplicity and clarity also influenced the album. "The way he uses silence, light and space really impressed me," Miller explains. "Sometimes minutes go by without movement or dialogue. I found that brave and inspiring."
