As part of this year's Open Call, double bassist and composer James Banner's world premiere "class-work" explores the meaning and relevance of social class. The multi-generational ensemble he is putting together especially for this purpose is dedicated to the personal experiences of its members in the context of their musical work.

The goal here is to explore themes of their own upbringing as well as current and intergenerational issues facing working class artists.

The starting point for the project is the personal experiences and stories of the musicians from Berlin, Leipzig, Cologne, Leeds and Glasgow. These refer to their own upbringing and socialization, that of their parents, and the history of the working class in their respective places of origin. In collaboration with Scottish composer, singer and performer Rylan Gleave, the ensemble weaves these into a compositional framework of electronic and chamber music elements with improvisational passages. James Banner's "class-work" thus ultimately triggers an exchange with the audience as well as the possibility for each individual listener to reflect: "Who am I, what has made me this way, and who do I actually want to be?"

The multigenerational ensemble that he has put together specifically for this purpose also addresses the personal experiences of its members in the context of their musical work on a broader level. The aim is to explore themes of their own upbringing, as well as current and intergenerational issues faced by artists from the working-class.
