Stefan Schultze's Large Ensemble
With his latest project "The Buchla Suite" Stefan Schultze's Large Ensemble dedicates itself to Morton Subotnick's composition "Silver Apples of the Moon" from 1967. In this special sound experiment the eleven musicians* embark on a formal and aesthetic exploration that seeks to find out how an ensemble can implement the functionality of a synthesizer.
Subotnick's piece is a touchstone, reference point and inspiration, but it is not intended to serve as a template for an identical translation. Rather, the ensemble wants to create an independent artifact that challenges the aesthetic and organizational principles of a large ensemble formation.
"Silver Apples of the Moon" is as relevant today as it was when it was written. Subotnick wrote the piece for the Buchla 100 synthesizer, which he developed in collaboration with engineer Don Buchla. The instrument itself, as well as Subotnick's compositions written specifically for it, defined what is now considered the West Coast style of sound synthesis, and influenced generations of electronic and electroacoustic musicians*. As a result, Subotnick is now considered one of the pioneers of electronic music.
