LeipJAZZig special concert: Suddenly Hip(p)
The life of Jutta Hipp is a fascinating one: born in Leipzig in 1925, she established herself as a jazz pianist in West Germany in the immediate post-war period before emigrating to the United States in the mid-1950s, where she earned a reputation as "Europe's First Lady in Jazz".
But Hipp's music career was short-lived: she took a job as a dressmaker in 1959 and gave up her stage career shortly afterwards. However, she remained connected to jazz until her death in 2003.
Two years ago, musicologist Ilona Haberkamp published a widely acclaimed biography of Jutta Hipp entitled "Plötzlich Hip(p)" (Suddenly Hip(p)), in which she concludes that the early end of her music career was due not least to the patriarchal structures in the music industry of the 1950s.
Haberkamp reads key passages from the biography at the Alte Nikolaischule. The evening will be musically rounded off with pieces from Hipp's work, presented by pianist Stephan König - advance booking €15/20, box office €18/23
