17th Festival LeipJAZZig
The Initiative Leipziger Jazzmusiker e.V. calls for the first of the four (!) Leipzig jazz festivals taking place this month. LeipJAZZig starts large orchestral with "fascinating rhythms". Stephan Konig translates for his orchestra some compositions by George Gershwin, which even 75 years after his death are fascinating not only rhythmically. That a pianistic Konig can also do it in a small format and with his own works, he shows one day later in a chamber music combination with the plucking and bowing Tom Götze as well as the percussionist Harald-Christoph Thiemann. 17th Festival LeipJAZZig Thu 22 to Sun 25 Marz ⁄⁄ UT Connewitz, kulturkaffee plan b ⁄⁄ 8 pm ⁄⁄ www.leipjazzig.de Heiner Reinhardt (b-cl), Michael Breitenbach (ss, ewi) and Kay Kalytta (perc) prove with Risc a little later how contrasting sound elements of prefabricated and spontaneously composed can be brought together without risk. Even if the group name suggests the opposite, Tom Götze and Stephan Bormann prove to be the many-stringed two sides of the same coin with their captivating concertante mixture of pop and Nordic jazz. A highly classifiable saxophone battle with many low notes is delivered by the Leipzig Saxophone Quartet and Rolf von Nordenskjold. Stephan König (© Steffen Pohle) Günter Kiesant (© Steffen Pohle) Guitarist Andres Bohmer and drummer Jan Roth invite you to a Swedish-inspired folk-jazz sound adventure. The festival ends with more than just a bang. Musicians of distinction in Leipzig jazz are rounded up to celebrate drummer Gunter "Emmes" Kiesant, who completes his eighth decade of life on March 8. The career of the still active reflects German jazz history: Spree City Stompers, Coco Schumann Combo, Michael Naura Quintett, Kurt Henkels, Slide Hampton, Jiggs Whigham, Wolfgang Schlüter,...
