A couple is having a picnic in the park »»zoom«« the park in the city »»zoom«« the city in the country »»zoom«« the country on the globe »»zoom«« the Earth in the solar system »»zoom«« … – this is how the short film “Powers of Ten” (1977) by brothers Ray and Charles Eames begins. The perspective widens, revealing the connections from the very small to the nearly infinite.
The short film serves as the central inspiration for the anniversary edition of the Seanaps Festival. For ten years now, it has been delighting audiences with its subtle and impressive interweaving of the arts. The festival’s opening event is designed with this in mind: Amos Peled’s multimedia installation focuses the viewer’s eyes and ears on medical technologies and the inner world of the body. The four days that follow will feature a variety of exciting events, with the “experimental club night” and “RadioLAB”—which will broadcast a live accompanying program from the Luru Kino—being particularly noteworthy.
Many things—and above all, the Copernican perspective of that short film—suggest that our species is quite lonely and, at the same time, insignificant on this pale blue dot in the universe. All that’s left, then, is to use the arts to give this place meaning and to come together in the process—and what better way to do that than at the Seanaps!
