Patricia Brennan / SHABAKA & Nduduzo Makhathini

"Back to the future" is in a way also a guiding principle for some jazz music. After all, there is often a desirable balance between a return to tradition and the new forms of expression that emerge as a result.
The two acts on this evening are exemplary of this returning music of the future. Patricia Brennan uses her mallets to give Mexican folklore imaginative new sound contours and thus invents experimental, contemporary vibraphone playing, for which she was also named "Vibraphonist of the Year" by Downbeat magazine. No less award-winning are Shabaka and Makhathini, in which traditional flutes and African Zulu tradition are carefully and virtuosically revived. At the same time, when they meet for the first time as a duo, they forge a path towards ambient or new age music, creating an unmistakable sound.
We would rather advise against time travel, with all its unintended side effects and risks. Anyone looking for a sonically outstanding hybrid between the traditional and the future-ready is much better off at the Schaubühne Lindenfels.
