The Tübingen pianist's new band relates to the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense about as the naTo does to NATO. Instead, the classical jazz quintet itself determines the content of its program: All compositions refer either to significant quintets in jazz history or to the music terminological meaning of the number 5 - from Louis Armstrong's Hot Five to Rainer Tempel's first quintet Der Atlas, which he founded exactly 20 years ago. Regardless of its conceptual underpinnings, however, Pentagon is a versatile, spontaneous band that loves to play. Formed last year, Claus Stötter (tp), Sebastian Gille (sax), Arne Huber (kb), Philipp Scholz (dr) and Rainer Tempel (p) recorded their first album this spring.
