Over the course of her career, French musician and composer Joëlle Léandre has revolutionized double bass playing from the ground up. In the improvisational process, she develops a unique style that draws on influences from contemporary jazz and classical music, complemented by percussive elements and the use of her voice. The result culminates in a truly unique sound framework.
Her solo performances resemble an ensemble that does not simply add one and one to two, but creates something completely new and unheard-of: Léandre's mezzo voice, four strings and two bodies of sound do not just form a sum - instead, previously unthinkable, fractal levels of possibility are developed that run crosswise the established (sensory) cosmos. If you look at Léandre's biography and the list of her companions, things become more concrete: Pierre Boulez, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Susie Ibarra, Anthony Braxton, Maggie Nicols and Elisabeth Harnik. By interweaving the numerous levels of jazz and new music, poetry and performance art, Joëlle Léandre creates something truly new.
