This year's laboratory is a self-experiment: for the first time, we will be using a location - the Galerie KUB - as a field for experimentation over several days in the context of the Leipzig Jazz Days, thus giving scope to the innovative, risky and unfinished.

The lab consists of three events.

One performance. Two artists. Two levels. Laboratory 3 explores how the past can be revived through new formats: How can the foreign be appropriated and shared? What power issues arise during selection and curation? And how can past events be reactivated for the present and future?

Bassist Christian Dähne thaws out archived musical practices - with the help of generative deep learning, ethnographic research and a critical examination of AI. To counteract resource consumption and exploitation practices, he deliberately limits the size of the data set. His instrument: a specially trained AI, fed exclusively with concert recordings by the post-hardcore band Fugazi. This system is used in the performance as a sonic basis for newly composed material.

This is contrasted by the lively, expressive performance of the artist Fellipe Vergani, alias FELL. He reacts directly to the space, audience and musical structures with his voice and body. His work thrives on improvisation, spontaneous reaction and a physical presence. Rooted in São Paulo's underground music scene, he develops a practice that combines humorous provocation, socio-political theory and visually powerful performances.
